Anatomy of a Web Address

The address of a website is made up of several different parts. Each part is separated from those that follow it by a single, forward slash (/).

The first part of the address--every thing up to the first single slash-- is the internet address of the Web Server. Everything following that first slash is a directory path and/or the filename of a particular page on the Web Server.

For example... consider the following "made-up" Web Address:

Server Address   directory   directory   Web Page filename
                  |                 |                |                  |
www.thisismywebsite.com/Articles/computers/thisarticle.htm

The filename of the actual Web Page is: "thisarticle.htm". (web page and files often use a filename extension of .htm or .html) This file is stored in a "directory" or folder called computers, which is itself stored in a directory named Articles. These Directories are stored on a Web Server whose Internet Address is: www.thisismywebsite.com.
